Instrument(s): Piano, Drums, Bass, Guitar and Vocals
Teachers and/or influences? Self Taught. I’m heavily influenced by my upbringing, and the people I’ve been fortunate to be around. Not so much ANY particular artist.
I knew I wanted to be a musician when… – I was hired to sing background behind Tevin Campbell on the Quincy Jones Album ‘Back On The Block’.
Your sound and approach to music: I would describe my sound as eclectic. I approach music simply from a feelings stand point. I don’t believe in genres, so I’ve ALWAYS done them ALL, and done them WELL! I love to rap, I love to sing, I love to play, I love to DJ, Dance etc.
Your dream band: My dream band is completely narcissistic. It would be 5 ME’s doing, and playing EXACTLY what’s in my head. A 100% complete expression of myself.
Road story: Your best or worst experience: I feel like, a new comer by saying that I really don’t have too many stories about being on the road, other than how people treat you differently, when they find out what it is that you do, and why you’re at whatever location you are that day.
I’ve found that the women really get a kick out of me, for whatever reason.
The first Jazz album I bought was: I never bought, but was given a few great jewels as a child. Miles Davis ‘Bitches Brew’, Mandrill, pick one! Jimi Hendrix and the Band of Gypsy’s. John Coltrane. Willie Bobo. Willie Colon. I really could go on for days.
CDs you are listening to now: Just talk radio.
Desert Island picks: Sahara
How would you describe the state of jazz today? Jazz???? Jazz is NOW the genre of ECLECTIC. If you’re doing something different. It’s Jazz!
What is your favorite song to whistle or sing in the shower? Lou Rawls “Your Gonna Miss My Lovin”.
If I weren’t a jazz musician, I would be a: FAN.
